ASKEW Paints CECS Sketch
here's the first piece I've painted from the selection of sketches people rocked last week. We were invited out of town to Tauranga to paint and not knowing what to expect, took all the different sketches printed out so I could choose the most fitting to the surface. In the end I went with one of Cecs sketches.
As you can see, it pissed down with rain the whole time and I was painting on a corrugated iron wall. This made for an extremely pleasant painting experience, especially the waterfall like stream of water gushing down the left side of the A.
I like how the piece came out although I don't know if I nailed it exactly the way it was intended. For example, the lean on the A isn't gangster enough, the cross of the K sits a little high and I really struggle with such bold classic arrows. I found this piece really educational. I think Cecs draws on such a catalogue of classic NYC styles, the kind that look really simple but the subtleties are what really make them actually tough to paint!
Here's a progress video and the finished shot.

ReplyDeleteWoah! I wasn't expecting you to paint this one. I felt like it needed the most alteration on the transfer in order to work out some of the kinks but you did a great job with it. You improved on a few awkward spots, like the way the S sits on the bar between the A and the K, and I also dig how you painted it horizontally rather than on a slant. It made the piece taller and it really adds a certain dynamic to it that wasn't present in my sketch. That "W" really has some boogie to it too! The only part that looks a little weird to me is the area where the arrow and the E meet for lunch on top of the K, which is my fault since I should've spaced it out more in my sketch. Other than that, I really dig it and I'm stoked that you decided to paint one of my sketches first! A++++++
ReplyDelete^ yeah that's definitely my least favourite part on my version too.. I really struggled to get that looking right..I think your style is deceptively hard to paint!
ReplyDeleteYeah I think Host said something similar when he painted a sketch I gave him a while back. I don't think that area really looks that bad, it's just a little crammed. You killed it though. Honestly, that's ten times better than how I would've painted it. It's a monster!
ReplyDeleteReally on point Askew! Love that you filmed the whole deal too.
